Uncovering the Secrets of the Altiplano

Immerse yourself in the profound archaeological and spiritual heritage of the Lake Titicaca region. This fully private, full-day expedition from Puno bridges the gap between pre-Incan architectural mastery and ancient fertility rites that are still subtly practiced by local communities today.

Your journey begins at the awe-inspiring ruins of Sillustani, perched gracefully on the shores of Lake Umayo. Here, you will marvel at the Chullpas—monumental, above-ground stone towers built by the Kolla people to bury their nobility. The precision of these giant stone structures rivals that of the Incas. After an intimate visit to a local Andean home to understand modern daily life, you will return to Puno for lunch. The afternoon shifts focus to the historic town of Chucuito, home to the enigmatic "Inca Uyo," widely known as the Temple of Fertility. Restored to its former glory by modern archaeologists, this ancient temple features dozens of stone phalluses planted in the earth, continuing to serve as a sacred site for local women seeking blessings of motherhood.

Insights

Essential details for your archaeological journey.

The Chullpas were constructed by the pre-Inca Kolla civilization. Their unique cylindrical shape—often wider at the top than at the base—was engineered to house the mummified remains of noble families along with their earthly riches, demonstrating a highly advanced grasp of architecture that rivaled the Incas.
The physical walking on this tour is relatively easy and mostly on flat or gently sloping terrain. However, because you are at an extreme altitude of over 3,800 meters (12,500 feet), any exertion can feel taxing. Your private guide will ensure a very slow, comfortable pace.
Yes, photography is completely permitted and encouraged at the Inca Uyo site in Chucuito. Your guide will explain the fascinating historical context and the modern cultural significance of the stone carvings while you explore the temple grounds.
